Onrus

Nestled between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Onrus is an idyllic seaside village. Located mere minutes from the tourist-laden bustle of Hermanus, this offers an alternative: a relaxed, tranquil environment, surrounded by unsullied natural beauty. A mere 120km from Cape Town, and nestled in the very heart of the Whale Route, Onrus is surrounded by the fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom and majestic Milkwood trees.

Onrus is the perfect balance between the convenience of urban life, and the peaceful serenity of living in a small town. The area is very popular with permanent residents, including many artists and others who value the serenity, as well as seasonal holiday-makers, who unwind on the pristine beach. The beach is popular for swimmers, with a tranquil lagoon and a bird hide in the adjourning nature reserve, with many rare bird species (including Giant Kingfishers) and even the occasional sea otter.

The beach is also popular with surfers and body-boarders, who are occasionally joined by curious dolphins. Mere minutes along the beautiful coastal path is a natural tidal pool, Davie's Pool, located at the popular Onrus Caravan Park. The pool is located immediately next to the beautiful Harder Bay Marine Reserve, where visitors can enjoy spectacular sunsets over the ocean in unspoiled natural surroundings.

Wandering the extensive cliff paths is an excellent way to spot the Southern Right Whales that inhabit Walker Bay between July and January each year. Indeed, Onrus celebrates the first calves born in the bay with a "Kalfiefees' (calves' festival) every August, with theatre, music and crafts as well as showcasing various local restaurants, bars and galleries. The first Saturday of every month also sees a craft festival in De Wetsaal in Roos Street.

Onrus is an ideal and convenient location to explore the beauty of the Overberg. The charm and breathtaking splendor is matched only by the sense of tranquility and relaxed lifestyle. Be warned: come and visit and you may never want to leave.
